FIND Orphy 2012

FIND Orphy is a collaborative outreach program between Project NEURON and the Orpheum Children's Science Museum. We hosted a one week summer camp for elementary students in July 2012 and we regularly host weekend activities for young children at the Orpheum. We are currently looking for ways to continue our collaboration.

Summer Camp 2012

Project NEURON and the Orpheum Children's Science Meusum ran a one week FIND Orphy summer camp starting July 9, 2012.  The camp was held at the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum.  Children attending the camp ranged in age from kindergarten to 5th grade.  Over the course of the week long summer camp, campers learned about various topics in neuroscience including: basic function of neurons, regeneration, color perception, and brain and eye structure (older students carried out sheep brain and eye dissections!)

Weekend Activities

FIND Orphy held 5 weekend outreach programs at the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum during 2012.  Two of the outreach events were during the UIUC spring 2012 semester and the remaining three were held during the summer of 2012.  Undergraduate Neuroscience Club members helped support these activities as did local high school students. The outreach events focused on activities found within Project NERUON curriculum: the role of circadian rhythms, color perception, stem cell regeneration, influence of drugs & toxins on organisms, and the structure/function of the brain.
