Thursday, November 21
Dynamic nature of science: Discovering the tree of life. 10:15 AM - 11:30 AM, Piedmont Room
Explore student activities linking NGSS to scientific research. Activities focus on the nature of science through the changing models of the tree of life and facilitate discussions about the controversial term "prokaryote." Free curriculum materials. (High school)
What makes honey bees work together? 2:45 PM - 4:00 PM, Dunwoody Room
The intersection between genetics, environment and behavior will be investigated in the charismatic honey bee. Come explore hand-on activities addressing Next Generation Science Standards. Free NIH-SEPA curriculum materials will be distributed. (High school - College/University)

Food for thought: A modeling unit investigating connections between the endocrine and nervous systems, metabolism, and health. 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM, Baker Room
Come explore a full unit of lessons that include hands-on activities addressing core ideas addressed in the NGSS connecting to energy metabolism, neuroendocrine function, and homeostasis. Access to free NIH SEPA funded curriculum materials. (High school)
Evidence, evaluation, and explanations through neuroscience. 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM, Piedmont Room
Explore student-driven activities and an engaging computer game that support skills in obtaining data, evaluating evidence, and constructing explanations through a curriculum unit on neuroscience! Includes access to free NIH SEPA funded materials. (Middle school, High school, College/University)
Branch out with software to create phylogenetic trees. 2:30 PM - 3:45 PM, Dunwoody Room
Learn to use free software to construct phylogenetic trees and explore the role of genetics in evolution of social behavior. In this hands-on workshop, attendees will participate in a series of activities and plan for implementing them with students. (High school, College/University)

Explore human-microbe interactions with hands-on activities. 9:45 AM - 11:00 AM, Rosewell Room
Take part in student activities focused on modeling microbial communities and their essential role in the human organism. Activities are designed to shift students' thinking about human-microbe interactions. Free NIH SEPA curriculum materials. (High school)
Go full-screen with NGSS: A model for teaching with video. 11:15 AM - 12:30 PM, Piedmont Room
Practice integrating multimedia video into your lessons using a model based on instructional intent. Example videos will be used to show how instructional intent impacts the design of learning experiences. Free curriculum materials available. (High school)
